Rachel Friedberg read The Jewish Voice recently in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The small remaining Jewish communities of the area, formerly the Emirate of Bukhara, are believed to date from the Babylonian exile, later becoming traders along the Silk Road and speaking their own dialect of Hebrew-inflected Persian. The community sheltered many Polish Jewish refugees in their synagogues and homes during the Holocaust, including Rachel’s father.
