“Remember where Almacs used to be?”

The Rhode Island Jewish Historical Association’s 60th annual meeting will be held on Sunday, April 6, at 2:00 p.m. at Temple Beth-El in Providence. All are invited to this free educational program, which asks the question, “Remember where Almacs used to be?”

In contrast to a traditional lecture, two non-native Rhode Islanders will discuss wonderful, wacky and wicked facets of Rhode Island history. The two historians are Dr. C. Morgan Grefe, executive director of the Rhode Island Historical Society, and Dr. George M. Goodwin, who has edited Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes for ten years.

Grefe, a New Jersey native, earned her graduate degrees at Brown and has served the Society for eight years. Goodwin, a California native, was coeditor of The Jews of Rhode Island, published by Brandeis University Press and University Press of New England in 2004. He is also a trustee of the Rhode Island Historical Society.

When reelected to one-year terms, the Jewish Historical Association’s five officers will be: Michael Schwartz, president; Ruth Breindel, first vice president; Dr. David Gitlitz, second vice president; Maxine Goldin, secretary; and David Bazar, treasurer.

Two new board members, Shai Afsai and Herbert Katz, will be elected to two-year terms. After many years of distinguished service, Harold Gadon will become one of four honorary board members.

The 60th annual meeting will be sponsored by the Arline Ruth Weinberg Memorial Fund. It will also be the 44th annual meeting honoring David C. Adelman, who founded the Association in 1951. A social hour will follow the program.
