Touro Fraternal begins centennial year celebration

Touro Fraternal Association, the largest independent Jewish fraternal order in New England, is proud to announce the commencement of its centennial year.

Founded by the Honorable Jacob A. Eaton, Rhode Island’s first Jewish member of the General Assembly, Touro was granted its charter by the state legislature in 1917 and organized a year later.  The association offers its members a sense of fraternalism, community and belonging with a tradition of philanthropy. It supports many Jewish and other charitable causes, both in and out of Rhode Island.  With headquarters at 45 Rolfe Square in Cranston, Touro has more than 500 members.

The centennial year will be marked with special events for its members, highlighted by a gala weekend celebration Sept. 16 and 17, and a focus on significant charitable works. Touro will be sponsoring Oneg Shabbats at synagogues throughout the state on the same weekend to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

A Centennial Committee has been planning activities over the next year, including the collection of materials to be included in a time capsule that will be opened at the 150th celebration in 2067.
