Question: Can I visit a mourner on Shabbat?

M.V., Pawtucket

Dear P.C.,

Since Jewish law prohibits sitting shiva on Shabbat, it may appear that the mourning family would be violating Halakha (Jewish law) by receiving guests. Therefore, custom has effectively resulted in the general prohibition of shiva visits on Shabbat.
