Following World War II, the Army brass assigned my older cousin Larry the task of overseeing all the PXs (military stores) in Western Europe. As a result of this position, he came to meet a number of U.S. celebrities – among them the popular comedian, Jack Benny, who had crossed the Atlantic to entertain the troops. Before returning to the States, Benny asked my cousin if he could do him any favors once he returned to New York City. Larry asked him to call his mother, Ann Berg, who lived in the Bronx.
