It was nice to see Hepzibah Alon’s review of “An Island Called Home” by Ruth Behar in the June 8 issue. When I took the book to Cuba, I met some of the people the author wrote about.

Three years ago when I was planning the Cuba trip, my friend Sue Klau had me take her copy of the book; she wanted autographs of Cubans depicted in the book.

Every two weeks, I receive my copy of The Jewish Voice & Herald and over the next few days, read what’s happening in our greater Rhode Island Jewish community and on the national and  international scenes. I read of local celebrations, services, opinions, events;  I read of the past, the present and the future; I read what’s taking place in our community and beyond.

Nina Tannenwald’s letter (in the June 22 issue) convolutes the definition of apartheid and endorses foreign boycotts of exports labeled “made in Israel.”  The practice of apartheid cannot be applied to Israel.  Israel’s security fence and administering hostile territory in response to ceaseless, implacable terrorism make sense and do NOT constitute apartheid.

I was so very saddened to read the recent letters to the editor opposing the Holocaust monument. It seems that our Rhode Island community can’t see that multiple Holocaust educational outlets are GOOD.
